O'Neill fears for Laursen career

Post by Quiver on Thu Apr 23, 2009 10:11 am

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has admitted defender Martin Laursen's career is in doubt after his season was ended by yet another knee problem.

The Dane has not played since January because of the latest in a string of injuries which have plagued him since he joined Villa from Milan in 2004.

"The news isn't good, he's deliberating what to do. We hoped he'd recover but he's having a hard time," said O'Neill.

"He'll make the decision and, whatever decision he comes to, I will respect."

Laursen cost Villa £3m but was restricted to just 28 appearances in his first three seasons at the club because of knee problems.

In 2007-08, his fitness improved and he played in every Premier League game, scoring six goals and winning the Villa fans' player of the season award.

But this campaign his bad luck returned and he suffered an injury against West Ham just before Christmas, since when he has only made one appearance.

Laursen appeared to be on the mend but he broke down again in training in January and has not played since.
